SOMERS, NEW YORK, March 2, 2010—The Somers Education Foundation (SEF) has announced the 2010 class for its Hall of Fame, which honors teachers, administrators, community leaders and others who have contributed significant time and effort over many years to supporting the Somers Central School District.

The new honorees include community leader Carol Cirieco, businesswoman Corinne Procopis, current president of the Somers Chamber of Commerce, and longtime Somers Intermediate School (SIS) instrumental music teacher Terry Reynolds. All have given tirelessly of themselves to enrich the lives of the children of Somers.

They will be inducted at the SEF’s 10th annual Gala Dinner Dance & Auction, to be held April 24, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Villa Barone Restaurant in Mahopac.

The Gala’s honorary chairwoman will be Somers resident Deborah Moldow, the representative to the United Nations of the World Peace Prayer Society, an international nonprofit organization promoting the prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” She was awarded the 2009 Spirit of the United Nations Award.

Cirieco has been a Somers resident for 25 years. She has been president of both the Somers Middle School (SMS) PTA and Somers High School (SHS) PTA , has advised the Somers Leos Club and is active in many civic groups.

Procopis is a Somers native. A publisher by profession, she is also a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother.

Reynolds is the band director at SIS and has taught in Somers for 21 years. He also served as band director for SMS and SHS. He has conducted the Westchester Elementary All-County band and directed bands at Manhattanville College.

SEF is a not for profit, tax exempt organization founded in 1994, comprised of parents, school representatives and community members. SEF supports the Somers Central School District by raising funds for specific student and teacher-initiated projects that enrich the education experience and are not funded by the district budget or other school groups.

  • As of March 1, 2010, SEF has cumulatively awarded more than $600,000 across 235 grants and scholarships, including more than $15,000 so far in the 2009-10 school year.
  • Grants have funded everything from educational trips, to computer and music equipment, to “Smartboards” for classrooms, to the “Rachel’s Challenge” diversity program.

Each year SEF also presents five scholarships to deserving graduating seniors, as well as awards to graduating eighth graders for outstanding achievement.
